What’s on the Real CSE

The actual Civil Service Examination is longer than this sample — expect roughly 170 items in 3 hours for the Sub-Professional Level, and about 170 items plus a writing exercise (essay) in 3 hours and 10 minutes for the Professional Level. Both levels cover the four subtests you just experienced:

  • Verbal Ability (~30 items): vocabulary (synonyms, antonyms), grammar and correct usage, spelling, verbal analogies, paragraph organization. Word attention is the #1 skill tested.
  • Numerical Ability (~30 items): basic arithmetic, percentage and proportion, algebra basics, number series, word problems, data interpretation from tables or graphs. No calculator allowed.
  • Clerical Ability (~30 items) [Sub-Professional only]: filing rules, alphabetizing, name matching, letter-perfect comparison, coding and decoding, following instructions. Professional Level replaces this with Analytical Ability (Logic and Reasoning).
  • General Information (~30 items): Philippine Constitution, government structure, current events, Philippine history, environmental issues, science and technology, CSC rules and regulations. The section with the widest topic range.
  • Writing Exercise / Essay [Professional Level only]: a 200–300-word essay on a specified topic. Assessed on structure, clarity, grammar, and depth of argument.

How to Read Your Score

  • 18–20 correct (90–100%): Outstanding. You are tracking for a comfortable CSE pass. Maintain weekly full-length mocks.
  • 16–17 correct (80–89%): Passing pace. Solid performance — the CSE passing mark is 80% overall.
  • 14–15 correct (70–79%): Borderline. You are close to the passing threshold. Drill your weaker subtest daily.
  • 10–13 correct (50–69%): Needs work. Start with the subtest where you scored lowest and use targeted CSE reviewers.
  • 0–9 correct (below 50%): Just starting. Commit to a structured 12-week CSE prep plan and re-take this sample every two weeks.

Recommended Next Steps

  1. Identify your weakest subtest from the breakdown above and spend the next two weeks drilling 30 items per day in that area with rationale review.
  2. Master General Information — memorize the 1987 Constitution structure (Articles I through XVIII), the four independent constitutional bodies (CSC, COMELEC, COA, Ombudsman), and the four major public service laws (RA 6713, RA 9485, RA 3019, RA 9184).
  3. Drill mental math daily — percentages, fractions, ratios, and basic algebra. No calculator on the CSE, and Numerical Ability rewards speed.
  4. Practice Clerical Ability with real filing scenarios if you are taking Sub-Professional. Real-world attention to detail beats abstract practice.
  5. Read newspapers daily for current events and General Information — Philippine Daily Inquirer, Manila Bulletin, and PTV News are safe sources for CSC-tested topics.
  6. Take this sample exam again in two weeks to measure improvement and identify persistent weak topics.
